2019 AD

In January 2019 François Schuiten donated several drawings he made for Musée des Arts et Métiers to the museum collection.

On February 17, 2019 Claude Renard passed away at the age of 72. He was a great figure of the Belgian comic strip and artist with multiple talents. Renard was Schuiten's teacher and they worked on several albums together.

Schuiten opened the second day of the Global Cities Makers Forum in February.

In February 2019 Martin Villeneuve held a recording session with actor Vlasta Vrana, composer Ben Charest and animation director Theodore Ty for a test they conducted for Aquarica. The workshop resulted in a 50 seconds animation test called The Crab: Prelude to Aquarica that was unveiled at the Cannes film market in May 2019.

Next to Aquarica Schuiten also works with Martin Villeneuve on another movie project called Waternova.

In March the fourth volume of Les Cités Obscures integrals was published. This volume concluded the integral publication.

François Schuiten took part in a group exhibition in May called “Timeless” inspired by the works of Frank Lloyd Wright. The exhibition was presented by Spoke Art and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

From June 2019 the publication of Le Dernier Pharaon asked all attention of François Schuiten. After working for four years on the album with Laurent Durieux, Thomas Gunzig and Jaco van Dormael the album was launched with an enormous campaign.

Schuiten and the Le Dernier Pharaon team joined the 24es Rendez-Vous de la Bande Dessinée d'Amiens for talks, signature sessions and an exhibition. François received the medal of the city of Amiens for all his project with the city.

In June Benoît Peeters visited Mexico for the 1st Coloquio internacional Ibero-anime-manga. He held two lectures on this event.

During Summer 2019 François Schuiten visited the comic festival in Uzès. He also published several images of an abandoned project called Nebula. A project François Schuiten was working with Mario Luraschi. It involved a spectacular show with horses and mirrors.

The Fête de la BD 2019 was held in September 2019 and featured an announcement poster by François Schuiten and Laurent Durieux.

In October Le Monde à grande vitesse (High-Speed World) was published, a book by Marie-Pascale Rauzier with several images by François Schuiten.

Two books by Benoit Peeters were published at the end of 2019: Dans les coulisses des aventures de Tintin and La bande dessinee entre la presse et le livre, based on two lectures Peeters gave earlier this year.

In November the exhibition Mondes (im)parfaits was opened. A major exhibition reflecting on the relationships between utopias and dystopias based on the work of Schuiten and Peeters.

Schuiten also joined a benefit evening Poelaert Foundation in November where he donated an artwork. Benoît Peeters visited Manila for the Manila 2019-2050: City of the Future Comics Contest.

During 2019 several albums of Les Cités Obscure were translated and published. La Fièvre d'Urbicande was translated to Portugese and Polish. La Frontière Invisible saw an Italian edition and a German edition was published of La Route d'Armilia.

Le Dernier Pharaon was translated in 2019 in Dutch, German, Italian, Spanish, Danish and Swedish.
