Black and White

When you finish a story, it is sometimes hard to stop the world of books you have impregnated. It is also an opportunity to make a series of images that have not found a place in the story. Some images are needed in black and white, in the continuation of graphic boards made. Some on the contrary can work in color to bring other emotions. The black and white has become in this story because of the mythology of the same steam train but also to make the harshness of the railroad business, to bring the darkness of the coal, to feel the vapors of the home. The black and white is a very demanding discipline, requiring a form of expressionism, which brings us probably a little of the heart of the job of a cartoonist.

Mythology

The railway posters have enabled countless artists to produce outstanding works. They were there to dream of travel, exotic, light, to highlight the speed, the performance of new machines. The poster artists of the 30s marked their time in a perfect balance between graphics, typography and design of the new locomotives. I wanted to introduce the Type 12 in this mythology, sometimes my inspiration directly from some of these images, suggesting that it might as well travel on several continents.

Photos

Marie-Francoise Plissart is an accomplice for over 30 years. I always admired his work. She followed me photographing scenographies often very difficult to capture, making the movement of light shooting often random. There is a small twenty years, I was already intervened on his photographic prints but the use of baryta paper size and limited graphics. The new printing techniques allowed us to work on formats and nearly two meters on paper who welcome the intervention of drawing and painting. In its archives, we have chosen from photos taken at the Technical Chamber, the places have been circulating the Type 12. This work was a constant dialogue where we seek together how best to bring out this locomotive.
