Grand Prize Manga at the Japan Art Festival 2013
François Schuiten and Benoît Peeters have won the prestigieus Grand Prize in the Manga category of the Japan Art Festival 2013 with their translated version of Les Cités Obscures 1). It is the first time that a foreign author wins this award. The translated Obscure Cities album was chosen over 457 other submissions 2). The prize is seen as the noble prize for comic arts in Japan 3).
François Schuiten and Benoît Peeters went to Tokyo in February 2013 to receive the award and inaugurate an exhibition at the Roppongi Arts Center. The awards consists of a certificate from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, a trophy and 600,000 Japanese Yen 4).

Remerciement pour le Grand prix manga 2013 du Japan Media Arts Festival
Nous avons appris avec beaucoup de surprise et d’émotion le prix qui nous a été décerné par le jury du Japan Media Arts Festival. C’est une très grande joie et un immense honneur de voir notre travail reconnu au Japon, un pays qui nous a d’abord fait rêver, un pays que nous avons visité ensemble et séparément à diverses reprises, un pays que connaissons et aimons depuis longtemps et dont nous apprécions tant d’artistes, parmi les mangakas, mais aussi parmi les peintres, les architectes, les écrivains et les cinéastes.
Par-delà les albums de la série « Les Cités obscures », que nous développons ensemble depuis trente ans, cette récompense montre que de nouveaux liens s’établissent aujourd’hui entre le monde des mangas et celui de la bande dessinée européenne. Des traditions longtemps séparées se rencontrent ; les artistes se lisent et s’influencent mutuellement, dépassant les frontières visibles ou invisibles. Nous espérons, et nous croyons, que ces échanges entre les mangas et la bande dessinée vont se multiplier au cours des prochaines années.
Toute notre reconnaissance va à notre éditeur ShoPro, et particulièrement à Mlle Misato Sawada, ainsi qu’à nos traducteurs Shinichi Furunaga et Masato Hara qui ont réalisé un travail exceptionnel, en dialoguant constamment avec nous. Merci aussi à Corinne Quentin et Kaoru Sekizumi sans qui ce projet n’aurait jamais pu se concrétiser. Merci enfin aux éditions Casterman qui publient les versions françaises de nos albums et nous ont constamment encouragés et soutenus depuis 1983.

National Art Center
Of every prize winner there is an exhibition in the National Art Center of Tokyo.

The preparations are moving on fast. The Japanese team is very efficient and is following the instructions, send by François Schuiten by email, very exactly. Meanwhile Vladimir Peeters films the setup with his steadycam.

Cover third translated book
In a few weeks time the third translated collection of the Obscure Cities will be published by ShoPro. François Schuiten is selecting the best cover for this album, while Katsuhiro Otomo is overlooking the proces. The cover in the front has been chosen. The new album will be published in March 2013

A friendly and cheerful dinner in Shibuya, with Corinne Quentin, François Schuiten and Katsuhiro Otomo, who received the grand prize for his short animated film “Combustible” 6) at the Japan Media Arts Festival 7).
