2022 AD

2022 marked the fortieth anniversary of the Obscure Cities. For the occasion Casterman published a new edition of L'Archiviste. This edition included a new edition of the map of the Continent.

Several places were mentioned on the map for the fist time, including: Boulachistan, Gorona and Leiko.

During 2022 François Schuiten worked in the Red Team to visualise the ideas that might threaten the world.

And Peeters book La bibliothèque de Villers got a reissue in 2022 in Collection de poche Espace Nord.

Imagin'Art was an event in June 2022 by the Order of Architects. During this event, Francis Metzger, François Schuiten and Benoit Peeters, Marie-Françoise Plissart and Pierre Marcolini talked about their art with passion.

Labyrinthes du rêve was an exhibition about the art of Francois Schuiten by Expressions 55 in Bar-le-duc between July 1 and October 31, 2022 at Espace Saint-Louis. During this event Schuiten received the the City Medal.

Another exhibition showcasing Schuitens work was organised in New York. Louis Vuitton Travel Book: Mars is a solo exhibition showcasing the original illustrations made by François Schuiten for the 2021 edition of the Louis Vuitton Travel Book at the Philippe Labaune Gallery in New York from November 10th until January 14th, 2023.

The drawings Schuiten made of Mars were also used in the "On Mars" music evening at 19 November 2022 during the Ars Musica festival 2022.

Bruno Letort is the director of the Ars Musica festival.Letort is also the composer of Nauti-poulpe. A experience made together with Thomas Penanguer (visual artist), Berangere Maximin (composer) Philippe Spiesser (percussionist), Alexander Vert and is based on the original drawings by François Schuiten. The images were made for Octopus garden and The Mysterious return of Captain Nemo.

Nauti-poulpe was part of Multibrain that was performed during the Festival Aujourd'hui Musiques in Perpignan 1) in November 2022.

Benoît Peeters was appointed as visiting professor at the 2022-2023 Chair of Artistic Creation at the Collège de France. In this role Peeters held a series of lectures with the title :"Poétique de la bande dessinée".

In 2022 several translations of the Obscure Cities albums were published:

After the death of Benoît Sokal in May 2021 François Schuiten finished the second volume of Aquarica. He had to draw about 15 pages to complete the album. A hard and emotional loaded task. This second volume was released in May 2022. Aquarica - La Baleine Géante was translated in Dutch and German.

Galerie Champaka organised an exhibition with artwork of Aquarica. The exhibition was opened on May 25, 2022 in the presence of Martine Sokal and François Schuiten,

François Schuiten worked also on the Meudon Vision 2040 project. For this project he made several drawings, for instance the one for Hanger Y.

During a talk about this project François Schuiten announced that "Le retour mystérieux du Capitaine Nemo" will be the next book in the Obscure Cities series. It won't be a comic book, but a series of images by Schuiten with texts by Benoît Peeters. The book will be published in 2023.

Altaplana.be saw the first French and Dutch translations of parts of the site. And Urbicande.be and Altaplana.be were subject of a paper by Jan Baetens.
