Révolution des images (La)

Nadar père et fils / interview photographique de Chevreul, 1886

La Révolution des images is the lecture Benoît Peeters gave from Monday January 7th to 15th April 2013 at the ISELP in Brussels on almost every Monday. This serie of lectures had the title “The revolution of images, Töpffer to Méliès.”

The lecture took you through the nineteenth century in particular, but without missing a few forays into the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The course discussed the major changes experienced with images by becoming reproducible, sequential and mobile.

The caricature, the illustrated books, the comic books, photography and cinema are all interlinked and this course will show you the connections and gateways between these domains.

Benoît Peeters discussed colorful characters like Töpffer, Grand-ville, Nadar, Muybridge, Marey, Edison, the Lumière brothers, Melies and Winsor McCay. There will escapements to Gérôme, Meissonier and Degas, but also Darwin, Clément Ader, Walter Benjamin, Edward Hopper, Chris Marker and William Kentridge.

Benoît Peeters explains (in French) more about this lecture in the following video.
