Preview of 2021

The end of the year is good for a review of 2020 but also for a preview of 2021. What are the plans of François Schuiten and Benoît Peeters for the new year? Of course due to Covid-19 plans are even more unsure than ever.

Due to Covid-19 the European Union meetings are already virtualized. The Europark buildings are empty. Will 2021 be the year that they decide that the Europark buildings are not needed anymore and can be turned into, for instance, a leisure and wellness park? Like it was predicted in Les Portes du Possible?

For sure the exhibition Chocoloco will run the first months of 2021 in Train World. The exhibition presents twenty original chocolate sculptures made especially for this occasion. François Schuiten, comic strip author and scenographer at Train World, designed the sculptures. Chocolate artists Peter Teerlinck and Bart Steegmans of Sculpture Events took care of the execution of the sculptures.

Aquarica and Waternova, the two movies Francois Schuiten is working on with Martin Villeneuve have stalled because of Covid. Villeneuve is turning to a TV project. Schuiten continues to work on The Compelled, the sci-fi novella written by Adam Roberts. A second book might be published in 2021. They are also working on a movie adaption of the book.

In February 2021 Benoit Peeters will publish a new book with an introduction to the history of comics: “Cinquante moments-clés de l’histoire de la bande dessinée”. The book will be published by Éditions Le Courrier du Livre.

Francois Schuiten is still working on his travel book about Mars that will be published in 2021 by Editions Vuitton.

And then there are the running projects of the Octopus garden in Amiens, the Red Team and the CNIT Paris at La Défense.

A German translation of L'Archiviste is planned for January 2021 and an English translation of L'Ombre d'un Homme is planned for March 2021. And if everything turns out right also a completely new translated English version of La Tour will be published late 2021.

In 2021 Laurent Hennebelle plans to publish a very special edition of La Tour. It will be a large size edition, published in very small numbers.

Two other albums of Les Cités Obscures will see a new edition. The first one is Les Portes du Possible. Published in 2005 Schuiten and Peeters never were really happy with the way the album turned out. Together with Jack Durieux they will revisit the album in 2021.

The other album is Brüsel. Not many details are known yet but it will be a very special edition. Jack Durieux will also help with this edition. It is unsure if they will be able to finish it in time to be released in 2021.

Atlantic 12 will publish one or two new prints by François Schuiten for the town of Meudon. The images will be again based on Meudons remarkable buildings.
